Xbox 360 worst DVD player on the market?

Damn, the cats over at ExtremeTech have an article up showing some serious flaws with the 360's DVD playback. Man, I need to look for a better DVD player. It is that bad. I'm talking worse than a $50 player bad. Come on MS. There is NO reason the 360 could not be a totally kick-ass DVD player when it comes to playback quality. The power is there. PLEASE write some better DVD playback code. Please.

See for yourself here.

Yep, that's pretty bad looking. I wonder how the HD-DVD drive compares when playing a regular DVD? Or, does it even play a regular DVD?

It does play a regular DVD, I was wondering whether or not the standard disc quality differs at all.

I am actually on the phone w/MS right now - not over the DVD player per se, but the disc tray. It seems that I am hearing a grinding noise that starts out loud and quick, before slowing to a halt. They say that the tray is trying to open while I am playing and I need to send the console back.

The upshot is that MS extended warranties, will pay for everything and they are usually good about turnaround times. Hopefully I'll get it back soon (maybe even a Zephyr????)

I didn't think it was that bad. Good thing i use my PS3 for all that stuff anyways.

What about the HDDVD player for DVD playback?

Eh, I like the 360's DVD player personally. It plays all standard DVDs, as well as DVD +/- R's...none of the other players in this house can do that.

So, IMO, the 360's DVD player isn't THAT bad.

The HD-DVD addon for playing SD DVDs should be the same as the internal drive. If I'm not mistaken they are just transporting the information to the xbox to do the processing as it is, just like they do for HD-DVDs.

True True - the DVD functionality that I've experienced on the 360 has been spot on. It does tend to play discs that no other player can, including my big ol 5 disc fancy set up. The only reason I am sending mine back is b/c the mechanical function of the disc tray is screwed up. Other than that I have no complaints on the DVD player.

The big plus for me (before the PS3) was that it can play copied dual layer discs. My Denon 910 can't.

The 360 picture was never bad. In fact, it was "okay" enough for me to use on a regular basis! That was until I started using the PS3 for DVD playback.

I sold the HD-A1 to Peench. It was a fantastic SD player, for sure! I was content with the HD-DVD add-on enough to use that as my sole HD-DVD player, for HD and SD!

The HD-A1 was definitely a fantastic player for Picture Quality!

The HDA1 does a fabulous job. So much so that I moved my XP-30 into another room and now realy exclusively on the HDA1. It is a bit slow at things, but the picture quality is excellent! Between that and the PS3 for BluRay I'm set!

And mad thanks to Jon for hooking me up with the HDA1.
