Joe consumer suppose to figure out all this firmware stuff so they can play movies? Yeah, I know, the mass market consumer isn't buying this hardware yet. But, do you really think it's gonna get much better? I love me a good firmware update. But, all the mass market consumers what to do is place the disc in and watch a movie. Not jump through fiery rings to get it to work. These HD disc formats need to be way more user friendly if they want the WalMart consumer. There too big too. Check out some pics of a open BD or HD DVD player. Tons of wasted space. Make them smaller and thinner.

| I think non-haters will find the article very interesting. It makes some very good points. | |

I don't know about that article. It may have some good points but I see tons of cherry picked articles, polls and surverys linked at the bottom as well as some things that were accurate 6 months ago (blu-ray's rough start) but not today. edit: rest of thoughts deleted, don't want to stir the pot

| Haha! Not sure how long ago the article was published, but at least he made the effort to look up the stuff that would back up his opinion. It wasn't simply fanboyism (or at least it didn't seem to be IMO). Definitely an interesting take. | |

Hybrid answers to DVD format wars
The rival formats have split the film and electronics industry
The first DVD player to play both rival high definition DVD formats has been announced by South Korean firm LG.
The dual-format player will be able to play the Sony-backed Blu-ray discs and the Toshiba-led HD DVD discs

Studio to end Blu-ray, HD DVD war with dual-format disc
By Tony Smith [More by this author]
4th January 2007 11:59 GMT
Movie studio Warner Bros. will next week unveil an optical disc format capable of being played in both HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc (BD) machines, the company has revealed.
Warner hasn't provided details, but the disc, dubbed Total HD, is likely to be based on technology patented back in December 2005 but revealed last September. It's a dual-layer disc, with an HD DVD layer on top of a Blu-ray one

Back to the article, it was very informative for me. I liked the research he did. I didn't think it was necessarily a fanboi article. He brings up very good points however.

Price them at the ridiculous prices of HD-DVD combo discs ($35-$40 for an SD versions I'll NEVER need), and say goodbye to many supporters.
This format war is going to be lengthy and interesting IMO. I currently only have an HD-DVD player, but am anxious to get my hands on a PS3 for the Blu-ray functionality. I support both formats as well. They are both equal in terms of what quality the can produce. Blu-ray happens to have a lot of movies that I would really like to have in HD, as well.

I'd prefer to see a really kick-ass HD-DVD/Blu-Ray combo player, keeping the disc prices down (and doing away with combo discs).

-Brad | Not trying to argue with you Brad but the first paragraphs state, "format" thus being a new disc and it still has to be accepted. I called a third format however, it is merely an option to lower costs.
I wasn't much into CDs although my sister and brother in law were since he was part of DJ business in the late 80s/early 90s. So I had no need to buy any vinyl (OK wait, I lied, I have all the Police albums), CDs, and tapes. So I am not well-diversed about the audio CD world.
