Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: South Portland , Maine | Fine tuning my Mits WS 55511 2 or 3 years ago I had a professional Calibrator come to the house to fine tune my Mits. At the time I did not have high def so I didn't have him do the high def input. Now I do have high def but I don't have the cash to get a pro in here. I've heard there are DVD's out that can explain how to fine tune or calibrate my TV. Can someone tell me which one I should get to use to do this, or if I should not attempt it at all?
Thanks | |

| If you don't have Avia or Digital Video Essentials already... those work great! | |

| Personally I use Avia I thought it was a bit easier to use then video essentials. | |

| NP - start out with Avia or DVE. If you are going to calibrate for HD, wait for one of the HD version to be put out. Once you have those basic adjustments out, you can move on to other internal adjustments (as described above). But start off slowly and see what you can do.
You might also want to try and eyeball it for now. You are used to a properly calibrated picture based on your existing inputs, so you can probably come pretty close by eyeballing it.

Thanks | You can tweak it, and improve it yourself--but only with an HD-DVD player and HD Digitial Video Essentials--if you display a standard DVD signal on the TV, you won't be seeing the HD output of the scaler--you'll see the SD output, and that's already been calibrated. With the proper screen template, you can even set the geometry and overscan. But to set gamma levels and grayscale, you'll need a colorimeter and the knowledge to use it.
I'd suggest you contact the guy who calibrated your set in the first place, and see how much he'd charge to finish the job.

| That's not a bad idea NP. In fact, if the guy who calibrated the TV is in the area, he'd probably touch up the set for a relatively nominal amount. | |

Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: South Portland , Maine | Yeah I have no idea what I'm doing so I'm going to leave it be for now. The Direct TV High Def programing looks fantastic, but as I said I did not have it at the time the set was calibrated so I did not have him do that input.
Greg Lowen did the calibration, if I can find his card I'll contact him and see what it will cost. Once I get back to work I can get him back to do a touch up. I think that's the best way to go for me.
Question: How often does a set like this need to be calibrated?

| they suggest once every 6 months but, in all reality, the main calibrations they make are set for life, like duvetyne lining, color correction (may need minor tweaking)..
convergence is the main issue but, that can be fixed pretty easily by yourself.
