General
The movie is about Douglas Quaid, a man who is haunted by a recurring dream about a journey to Mars. He eventually decides to try out going to Mars via a holiday through Rekall Inc., where they sell implanted memories. However, something goes wrong with the memory implantation and he remembers being a secret agent fighting against the evil Mars administrator Cohaagen. From this point on it is a roller coaster of action and plot twists.
In true Paul Verhoeven fashion, this movie has more then it's share of blood and guts. There are a lot of people killed in various ways throughout the movie.
Tech Specs
Video: The video looks very good for a move that was made in 1990. There was no grain and the CG blended well for a movie that's over a decade old (when compared with Ultraviolet for example). The blacks where solid with no grey overtones. The film itself has a lot of red saturation, but this was intended by the director (they were on Mars afterall!).
Audio: The audio was very good. The surround channels and bass where used aggressively as well. The scenes toward the end of the movie rock the room. Unfortunately there was no uncompressed audio option. I did, however, listen to both the DTS HD and the DD EX track and they both seemed to be very aggressive with a good, complete sound field.
Extras
There are only two extra features. An ad for other Lionsgate movies and “Visions of Mars” featurette. Both where widescreen but had some matting problems. “Visions of Mars” was about mankind someday going to and colonizing Mars.
Menus/Navigation
Navigation was very straight forward. When you activate the popup menu, the movie stopped. There was a help function that walked you through how the menus worked.
Overall Impressions
I personally think this is one of Arnold's better movies with lots of twists and turns. Anyone who is a sci-fi fan needs to see it at least once. If you like science fiction I recommend Total Recall as a purchase. I was able to get it for $19.99 with no discount in the HD world. That is a good bargain!
