Blu-ray Review: The Marine

Reviewed By: dmiller68
Video Format(s): 1:85:1 1080p
Audio format(s): DTS HD 5.1, Lossless Audio, Dolby Digtal Surround (Spanish, French)
Starring: John Cena, Robert Patrick, Kelly Carlson
Directed by: John Bonito
Release Date: February 13, 2007

General
The feature film debut of a wrestler John Cena. This movie is all about slam-bang action with a weak plot. The movie is about a former Marine with an authority problem who tangles with dangerous jewel thieves after they take his wife hostage. Cena handles the physical duties of his role with ease, and the director offers him a frantic array of situations in which to display his prowess. On the whole, however, the picture is very light in the logic department, and filled with lame characters that die quickly without you caring much about them.

Tech Specs
Video: The video is very clean and looks good. The night scenes lit by fire had lots of detail. The colors are sharp, as you would expect from a movie made in the last year.

Audio: There were loads of explosions and gun battles to give your system a workout. Bass was used a lot, though not aggressively. The ambient sounds were fairly well done as more than a few times I thought there was a cricket in the house!

Extras
Extras include a making-of featurette, which includes interviews with the cast, crew, and WWE head/producer Vince McMahon, as well as a barrage of shorter featurettes on Cena's rise to fame and the film's premiere at Camp Pendleton.

Menus/Navigation
Navigation was very straight forward. When you activate the popup menu, however, the movie stopped. There was a help function that walked you through how the menus worked.

Overall Impressions
This movie was completely unbelievable... much like wrestling, where the lead actor comes from. Personally, he can’t act and should go back to the ring. I cannot recommend this movie unless you want to see a lot of things blow up (and I mean alot, as in pretty much everything) in an unbelievable fashion with a mediocre plot. This movie has little to no real plot and would be a waste of your time if that's what you are looking for.
