| Any one use or have knowledge about UPS systems? I want to get some kind of UPS device since I changed VOIP services to keep going to the voip adapter and, possibly, the phone. I'm not really looking to keep my LAN up. When power goes out near my house, it's usually for a few hours.
The modem does have a 4 hour battery backup.
I was considering maybe this deal at Costco: Costco link
Thanks in advance. | |

| That one would probably work. Most of them do the job if all you are looking for is battery backup. Plus that looks like a good deal! | |

| Well, I went another direction, and got the APC Back-UPS RS 1500VA and the APC BACK-UPS RS/XS 1500VA 24V BATTERY PACK
main unit:
expansion unit:
According to APC's run time chart, I'll get some lengthy time, at 120V, 50watt, 80VA~, I can get 6 hours and 10 minutes. My phone adapter only uses 5 watts. So I can add my phone and probably a few other things and still maintain 4 hours if not more.
I liked this unit because of the expansion unit, and that the battery can be replaced if it goes bad. The only thing I didn't like is if the expansion pack battery goes bad, it cannot be replaced.

| Those work very well. I have six of those that I got from Compusa for a total of $240 each a few years ago. I also have three more units without the external runtime battery. They work very well and they give me at least several hours of runtime during a black out. I have all my electronics connected to one.
The only bad thing about the external battery pack is that it is sealed and doesn't have a user replaceable battery.

As it turns out, it's wayyy more than I need, since I'm apparently only consuming about 140 watts (16% capacity) with everything at my desk plugged into it (router, modem, VoIP, USB stuff, printer, all-in-one fax, telephone, PC, monitor, speakers). But, that'll translate into a longer runtime, if needed. It's amazing how much juice a CRT monitor uses, though. If I turn off the monitor, it drops to around 87 watts.

| I'm not to concern about running everything in the office. I've got too much stuff. I'm hoping to have a enough juice to run the voip adapter, smoothwall machine, a router, and maybe a cordless phone. I have two laptops with have batteries, so I will have some internet access.
I'm sure if I connected all the stuff in here, except the gaming consoles, I would suck it dry fast, which would be another router, three desktops--one is an Alienware gaming machine--wireless print server, laser printer (from what I read not a good idea since they consume way more power than recommended for the device), and two LCD flat panel monitors.
Now I just have to convience Comcast to give me a second modem battery.
