USB Thumbdrives and Security

I picked up a 3-pack of USB thumb drives yesterday, since I've not yet had one. I want to be able to carry around some contracts and such so I can print them at the library or something if I ever run out. Anyway, I've been told there's a way to lock the information on there, so noone can access the file on the thumbdrive without a password. Is there some freeware out there that you guys have used for this purpose?

I have encryption software for my Sandisk thumbdrive but I don't have it with me right now, I am trying to find the software that you can download, just can't remember the name of it yet.

The U3 software is what came installed on my SanDisk Cruzer. I am not sure what the exact difference is between a thumb drive and a smart drive, but I don't see why the software wouldn't work on a non-SanDisk stick. The U3 software actually enables you to run some software from the stick, without installing to, or leaving traces on, the computer that it is plugged into.
