I'd like to get a nice widescreen for me, as my video card has DVI-D. My wife's PC only has VGA, so I can't get anything too fancy, but she doesn't want anything fancy, either, so a simple (i.e. cheap) 17" will work.
Any thoughts? | |

However, they do cost a bit of coin...
I do however think that Dell makes some great monitors... The Apple ones are very good as well but even more expensive. Most of the MAC guys at work use the Dell 24" monitors. I also like Samsung and those have been the ones I have been buying.

Acer's have been priced very competitively lately, and from what I've heard, they are pretty good monitors.
Anywho, here is the monitor I got: SAM 225BW

| Dell's are great monitors from everyone I've heard from. I have a couple of widescreen Viewsonics at my office and they're pretty nice:
If you want the model numbers lemme know and I'll get off my arse and look at the back of the monitors. It was much easier to simply type that than to actually get up and look and then type the model number... dang, I feel like carp and even moving out of my chair seems like too much of an effort.

| Gateway has some good monitors. i have the 21" widescreen version and I'm thinking about upgrading to the 24". The gateway monitors are also HDCP compliant, unlike most other monitors.(which will be important if you want to connect an HD DVD/BD player to the digital inputs or watch a movie from the PC in either of those formats with the digital input.) The 360 at 1080P over the VGA looks excellent on the 21". I'm waiting for a 10%/12% off coupon and another 2 or 3 year no interest promotion before I pick up the 24" version. | |

Since I eventually want to have my own flat panel in my office, I should probably shoot for a 24" widescreen that supports 1080p AND can be used as a PC monitor. That may be shooting for the moon, when dealing w/ my wife, but it gives me a reference point. Thanks for the tips, fellas!

| that's pretty slow, 16ms. Response time is pretty big if you plan to watch fast motion at all or play games on it. 8ms sounds good, I think mine is 12 or something like that and it's still slightly noticeable. | |

A standardized measure for response time across the industry doesn't exist. Here's a good article from PC World that explains it better than i can: PC World Article.

I cry every time I go home to my 19" CRT. I need one of these for the home PC.
