When you mentioned young MC it clicked. When they showed the MC helmet sitting where they kid was laying, it was subtle but effective in conveying that. This makes me want to read the books even more.

Okay, apparently Frankie & KP showed up in a IRC chat last night right after the trailer aired, here is the transcript, stolen lovingly from HBO:

Konrad: Frankie, is the so-called Shield Grenade a game element?
Frankie: Nothing in the trailer was placed there by the agency - that is to say, every object and action was put in there with Bungie's consent and usually assets.
Frankie: Which you have t assume we wouldn't do without good reason, riht?

Angel: My question: Are the models of the kids supposed to represent John and Kelly, and if so, is there a specific time frame that they're in, such as during a training op or something?
Frankie: The children at the start are there "for your interpretation."
Frankie: Are they young Spartans? Are they Earth kids from the 20th century? It is a question presented in the ad, not an answer

Frankie: Why does the shield have to be from a grenade? Obviously the object is grenade-like. But who says it's a grenade?

Narcogen: Grenade or not, does the "not indicative of gameplay" caveat apply to the special shield the Chief used in the advertisement-- in other words, is this something we should NOT be expecting to see in gameplay?
Frankie: Not indicative of gameplay means, these images were not captured from the gameplay engine.
Frankie: Anything else is up for interpretation

KP: The trailer takes place on earth.

Veegie: What were the high pitches screaming during the time frame transition?
Frankie: The high pitched screaming was a transition to the explosion noise

Man, I just watched that trailer! I am not incredibly excited for Halo 3 in general but, that trailer gave me the chills regardless!!!

Not to Cortana, but everything there depends on when/where the flashback takes place.

If the young boy is in fact John, then the flashback, to me at least, presumably takes place before he enters the Spartan program. I say this because I doubt they'd have much time to canoodle like that after they began training. This would mean that the girl is just one of his childhood friends. If it does take place after they've entered the training, then my money would be on Kelly.

Personally though, I think it's before John enters the Spartan program, because the contrast between peace and war would be greater that way. The innocence of children gazing up at the sky would be lost a bit if they were already young killing machines.

To our knowledge, never on Earth.

I don't think all of the commercial takes place on Earth though. The real-time action does (it's desert in Africa) but the flashbacks are fair game I think.

I'm confused too, but I don't think they want to tell us what or who the kids are, I think they're totally open to interpretation. Me thinking it's John and one of his friends just feels the best for me. If they were just some random chittlins staring up at the sky I could probably care less about them in relation to the story.

They're definitely not "dressed" in 20th Century garments though, so it's the future at some point I suppose.

Dude, Rhino, you didn't even explain your whole "flashback" theory of John being knocked out in combat and having a mental flashback while unconscious. Perhaps I'm the only one who didn't get that when I watched it?

I keep re-watching, but I'm confused on one point. Is he near a crashed warthog or a mongoose? When he's reaching for the rifle it's a warthog and when he's crouching with the shield, it's a mongoose. Did it change or are there two crashed vehicles he's beside?

I was looking on the internets last night and some moron is convinced you can see MC's face in the helmet. The only problem is that the "face" is on the far left side of the visor...........and you're in 1st person. I love idiots on the web

Here's something I noticed the other night when watching it for a 5th time. When the scene changes from looking at the kids, to the helmet lying on the ground, did you notice which kid's head was on the screen just prior to seeing the helmet in the same position? It was the girl's, right? Not suggesting MC's a girl, especially w/ that deep voice (unless she became a chain smoker early in life), but I do find that fact worth considering. Your thoughts?

That's what I thought too. Because, facing down from the sky, the boy is on the left, and the girl is on the right. However... it could either mean that a. it was alluding to a female Spartan or b. it was just showing that the boy was, in fact, MC, by showing his first person view, and the helmet just happened to be where the girl was.

How is that for a run-on sentence? I am sure Bungle did that on purpose... just to keep people guessing.
