Reccomendation needed

I'm about to donate an older PC and would like to ensure any and all personal items are removed before I do. Any opinions on free or cheap software to achieve this?

That was going to be my recommendation too. I use the free version all the time here at work. You can pay for it and get a better level of formatting done but that probably won't be necessary.

Snake - your other option is to donate it after you've removed the disk drives. Then take the drives apart and take your aggression out on them by beating the crap out of them with a hammer or whatnot. Then mail the pieces separately to Hobie and Lil g.

I would just format the HDD and install Ubuntu or whatever OS system that came on the system. It's simple, cheap and permanent.

Go with what teh botmann said. Burn yourself a disc of Ubuntu and it will format it and install for you. Ubuntu is linux for human beings, it is more than user friendly.

For the record - formatting a drive doesn't delete all of the information on the drive. Only writing over all portions of the drive in which there was data previously will do that.
