Join Date: Sep 2006 Location: Jacksonville, FL Age: 37 | Anti-perspirant vs. Deodorant I've used Anti-perspirants for years with no real complaints. However, lately, I've let myself get sucked into the muddy debate over the potential [undetermined] link between Alzheimer's and aluminum contaminants in the bloodstream, caused by the use of products containing alumunim. Anti-perspirants contain an aluminum compound.
Well, this week, I switched to deodorant, and I am none too pleased with its performance. I'm very generous with the application of it, but it starts to wear off by 3pm, which leaves me with an exponentially-increasing body odor for the rest of the day. (at least, it seems that way to me since I'm aware of it) It's embarassing to say the least. I'm tempted to switch back, but I want to make sure I'm not using the wrong stuff, or maybe I just need to reapply during lunch. I'm using Right Guard Extreme deodorant, right now. I was previously using the Anti-perspirant flavor of it prior to my switch.
Which one do you use, and what's your experience?

I've used nothing but anti-perspirants for the last 20 years so no experience with a plain deodorant. If I did use it, I wast aware
If you're worried about your armpits soaking in compounds and getting sick, don't take a breath, don't walk outside, dont go a restaraunt that allows smoking......

I tried doing what you're doing Zoom. It didn't last, by mid-day I smelled like the homeless dude I ignore on the subway. I didn't want him thinking I was his homie, so I switched back to anti-perspirant.
That being said, there are anti-perspirants that don't use aluminum whateveritscalled, but I forget what they are.

If you're worried about the possible effects of AP, try Tom's Natural AP. It's not as effective as Degree, but it works much better than deodorant. Tom's doesn't have any potentially toxic metals (they make good toothpaste also).

So I changed brands all together. I use the adidas no-sweat stuff. No complaints so far.

| man, I'm lucky! I don't have to worry about either of those! I guess one of the benefits of being asian! I don't really sweat too much and even if I do, I've never needed to worry about body odor! Makes my wife jealous because she hates applying either but, like the rest of you, has to!
Sorry, I can't put too much input into this because I have no real experience with either!

Sorry, I can't put too much input into this because I have no real experience with either! | Dude, you are lucky -- I, however, am one hairy and sweaty bastag (I'll bet that leaves a pleasant vision in everyone's mind) and rely heavily on AP/deodorant.
Eric, I was wrong -- the Tom's product is only deodorant. My wife, who tends to worry much more than I do about things like environmental toxins, bought me some of it a couple of months ago. I wore it a couple of times to appease her, but it smelled too flowery for me. I picked up someof the unscented kind a few weeks ago, and it works pretty well as a deod. Keep in mind though, that it's a deod, not an AP (meaning you'll still sweat, it just won't smell). If you're a pit master like me (I can grow some killer sweat rings by the end of the day), you tend to want the AP sweat protection as much as the order protection. I'm still undecided (the aluminum thing scares me a bit also), but the Tom's works at least as well as any regular non-AP deodorant that I've tried. Here's a link on the product if you're interested.

My brother doesn't sweat much either, but he's not asian. I don't think. Maybe he is, I don't know EVERYTHING about him.

| no, when I was actively running and such... especially even through high school I would never need that stuff.
Even now whenever I play volleyball or do work outside or whatnot... same deal!
I think it's a combination of not having a lot of body hair as well as just good genes.
My wife says she hopes our kids get that from me! Hopefully the girl(s) will have my genes with body hair and it will save them a lot of time and effort shaving and such!!

I just switched to deodorants from antiperspirants in the past 6 months too (for the same reason as Zoom). I currently use Axe. I have to beat the ladies away with a stick.
