Windows Home Server

This was announced at CES. It caught my eye and I finally had a chance to check out some content about what it actually is. Home Server is basically a small....home server for your home network that is controlled through a console interface from your existing PC. You don't sit in front of this server. Throw it in a closet and forget about it. I have never used Windows Server tech so I can't compare Home Server to that. But the interface seems simple, server management is intuitive and easy to use. This box will automatically backup all your PCs on your network daily and adding space is SIMPLE. No partitions or drives to create. Simply add the new HDD and Home Server adds it to the storage pool. Nice. It can also be used to serve up all your media (photos, music, videos) to your network and of course your Xbox 360. Hopefully these little magic boxes won't break the bank. I'm seriously thinking about using a Home Server box as my central hub for my home network.

Check out On10.net for a cool video about Home Server and it's features.

I thought it sounded interesting. My only hesitation is that I'm doubtful it will work with .aac files (itunes).

Edit: I'm sure it will back these file sup, but I'm nt sure it will allow the streaming of them (especially protected ones).

So far, unprotected AAC files work fine with the MS stuff don't they? (other than the 100 song limitation on the 360)

I "unprotect" all my aac's for this reason. Ticks me off they want to tell me where I can keep my music... I understand that less scrupulous customers will just give it away tho.

Lightbulb

Definitely looks good, but who has a power outlet or the room, for that matter, in your closet. Overheating would seem like a really big issue with this.

Hopefully this would allow multiple simultaneous, ongoing streams, both internally and externally. Would could share all of our music llibraries !

I'm sure it will stream the .aac to other PCs, but not to the 360. This is pretty cool... I've always wanted to build my home network. I learn about it all day, but never get to put it to use.
