iTV -- what is it

OK, would one of you MAC Fanatics talk me through what this new-fangled iTV device is exactly. I get that it'a device that allows you to watch music, movies, tv shows, etc from your iTunes library to watch on your TV, but what else does it do? Is it also a DVR?

The specs here (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPL...family=AppleTV) list a widesceen TV with HDMI, Component, or DVI as a pre-req. But with only a 40GB HDD, it doesn't seem like it would be a very effective DVR (at least for HD content). Does iTunes have HD movies and TV shows available? Would this device function like a media center extender only it works with iTunes instead of Media Center?

$300 seems like a lot for a media extender; it would seem like with a premium like that it would do something else.

Please help shed some light, 'cause I'm kind of curious.

It seems like an extender for iTunes content. Can't let MS own the living room with Media Center and Xbox 360. Yeah, a 40GB HDD for DVR functionality is laughable. If that is indeed what it is for. I can fill a 120GB drive in no time flat with HD content.
