SANTA ANA - A man awaiting trial for allegedly murdering a couple and dumping their bodies at sea as part of a plot to steal their 55-foot pleasure craft tried to cut off his penis, but it was re-attached, an official said Thursday.

Skylar Deleon, 29, somehow got a razor and "tried to saw off his penis" while in his cell on March 13, said Damon Micalizzi of the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

"He was unsuccessful," Micalizzi said. "As I understand it, there was a lot of blood."

Micalizzi said he did not know if Deleon stopped the effort himself because he could not carry it out to conclusion, or was interrupted by a guard.

Deleon was taken to a hospital, his penis was re-attached, and he was back in his cell the next day, Micalizzi said.

Prosecutors have said they will seek the death penalty against Deleon and John F. Kennedy, both former Long Beach residents accused of murdering Jackie and Thomas Hawks, a Prescott, Ariz. couple, in November 2004 to steal their cabin-cruiser, "Well Deserved."

Deleon's wife, Jennifer Deleon, was convicted for her role in the alleged plot and was sentenced in October to life in prison without parole.

According to evidence that has come out at various hearings, Deleon -- a former child actor who appeared as an extra in the television series "Power Rangers" -- later in life suffered injuries in a motorcycle accident that left him incontinent with a need for special medical supplies.

Deleon is also accused of murdering Jon Peter Jarvi, 45, of Anaheim in December 2003 along a highway in Mexico and stealing $50,000 in cash.

Deleon and Kennedy's trial is scheduled for Aug. 25.
