360/PS3/Wii launch numbers compared

I'm doing this primarily so that we have a thread where all these amounts are in a single place for future reference. I've been posting the info in the Sony and Nintendo areas and they are spread out and I can't find some of the numbers so...

**
I will update this after Nintendo has launched in Japan and Europe in a couple weeks. And if I remember, I'll update again when Sony launches in Europe in 2019!

1st off, so called rumors that developers/analysts circulated last Wednesday were not rumors after all....

1. Sony did NOT have near the 400,000 mark they said they had ready for the U.S. launch. I posted 2 days b4 the ps3 launch that developers/analysts said that 150 - 200,000 was much more realistic. Sony NEVER denied this info so immediately I knew it was probably legit.

2. Nintendo DID have between 400,000 - 1,000,000 units ready for their U.S. launch as promised. As of this moment, Nintendo has SOLD roughly 700,000 units in 2 days here in the U.S. alone!

In contrast, Sony has shipped and sold roughly 172,000 units in the U.S. in the past 4 days.

So allow me to post what Each respective company had ready for the 3 territories(*shipped* and *sold* will equal the same amount seeing as they ALL sell out within days[except for 360 in Japan, lol].

Xbox 360 launch:
U.S. = 360,000 (Sold Out)
Europe = 350,000 (Sold Out)
Japan = 120,000 (62,000 Sold)
Total Shipped: 830,000

Sony PS3 launch:
U.S. = 172,000 (Sold Out)
Europe = Zero (launching in 4 to 5 months)
Japan = 88,000
Total Shipped: 260,000

Nintendo Wii:
U.S. = 700,000 (Sold Out)
Europe = atleast 80,000 (Sold Out)
Japan = 372,000 (Sold Out)
Total Shipped: 1,150,000

Just for poops and giggles, Sony has sold 172,000 PS3s in the U.S. I'd like to see the ratio for copies of Resistance that sell. Why do I mention this? Because in the U.S. alone, out of the 360,000 360s that sold here, roughly 273,000 people bought CoD 2 if you recall. 130,000 copies of Resistance would have to have sold this weekend to match that(Not likely seeing as most were bought to slap on ebay).

it's interesting, to say the least, to compare the numbers of each of the respective console launch allocations/sold!

It's amazing that Sony did not even get close to their mark of 400,000 units!

We'll see if PS3 and Wii will make their projected sales by the end of the year!

LOL, what an honor Huf, thanks!

Nintendo will exceed their mark, Sony won't come close.

Sony promised 200,000 for Japan, they shipped 88,000.
Sony promised 400,000 for the U.S., they shipped 172,000

Let us Not forget that meanwhile, 360 is flourishing, with 1.2 million SOLD in the last 5 weeks alone. Gotta love Holiday sales! They should reach 9 million by jan 1st(a million shy of their goal[which was 2 lofty in my opinion).

*I wouldnt be making a fuss if Sony didn't brag about having more ready than MS did for the U.S. launch. Just 1 of 371 examples of why they should STOP trying to make MS look weak. Everytime they do, they mind as well put a "Insert Foot in Mouth" tattoo on their foreheads.

That is great info - I am happy to see that Nintendo Wii did so well. That means better market positioning for MS. I wonder how much the South Park episode last week helped sales?

I just said yesterday they'd fall short. Someone get me a cookie!

Well the word is out. Sony has cut their shipping goals in half....again.

They expect to get no more than an additional 200,000 to the U.S. from now until Christmas. Retailers are the culprits in getting the word out, they are livid. Thats less than 400,000 total in 6 weeks shipped and sold in the U.S. while Nintendo will reach close to the 2 million mark by January 1st here.

Like every review out there, the system was delayed and still, after all that time, feels as it was rushed to market.

I will never let the execs at that company live down their comments of "We don't care when the competition launches, the next generation starts when we say it does".

arrogant #$&@^*#!!!

**With only that many units available at the busiest shopping time of the year, a LOT of people will be buying Wiis and 360s instead.

I edited the original post to reflect Nintendos standings. In just a few hours they sold more Wiis in japan than Sony had manufactured for Both territories combined.

By the time some of you read this, they will have sold around 1.2 million! And they launch in Europe in 6 days too!

Go Go Wiiiii60!!

*40 days will be the benchmark as we know thats what the 360 did from November 22nd to January 1st*

New numbers to ponder:

360: 1.6 Million sold in all 3 territories in 40 days
Wii: 1.1 Million sold in 2 of 3 territories in 17 days
PS3: 366,000 sold in 2 of 3 territories in 24 days

It'll be interesting to see where the Wii stands at the 40 day mark. They raised the bar for having sooooooo many units manufactured and ready to go! They will surpass 2 million easy seeing as they launch in Europe in 4 days

*Note* PS3 worldwide sales are right now at how many 360s Sold in the first 2 days here in the U.S.

I wonder if the higher-ups within that company admit they rushed it? Or if their supreme arrogance blinds even themselves when they lay in bed at night playing their Wii60s

I love numbers!!

Whatever they would have had, they would've sold. I'm sure of that.

More numbers....

*Side Note: 360 hit 8 Million today

All of September 2006: 212,000 360 sales
All of October 2006: 218,000 360 sales
Nov. 28th - Dec. 4th.[1 week]: 348,137 360 sales!

Amazing what the Holidays do for sales, and helps that Sony effed up biiiiigtime. "What Ifs" don't cut it.

Nintendo sold roughly 550,000 and Sony 52,000 within that same week.

Wow.

What wouldve been worse for Sony- the way they did it, or pushing back the launch (again)?

spoonman- You are my hero! I love your posts...I agree that it is good to see Sony eat some words because they are so damn arrogant. I mean they have reason to be arrogant but they should not assume assume that everyone in the gaming world wants their generic system even though we might be the only ones that dont want it lol.

did you ever notice how much of a rip-off that the ps3 controller is. Hmmm motion sensitivity (wii anyone) playstation button in the middle (360 anyone). as crappy as the boomerang design was before it got scrapped at least it was different.

The best part is they eat their words with EVERY comment they make. They are their own worst enemy at this point and they don't know how to turn off the "bullshit" switch, they just keep spewing forth crap.

**I edited the original post to reflect the actual amount Nintendo shipped and sold in Japan, which was 372,000 units

The controller is prety nice. Where else would you put the power-on button? On the back or somewehere else more cumbersome?? The PS2 (or 1) had a motion sensing controller at one time- will you now turn around and call Nintendo a rip-off? I like the controller more than the 360's, and thats saying a lot- I really do love that controller.

I wouldn't be too quick to bash Sony, especially when you don't own one. I hope the PS3 is highly successful- it will benefit people like me that own both consoles and get the best of both worlds.
