GPS Nav System

My dad is looking to get a new GPS nav system for his car. we are looking for a reliable and fairly cheap (250 or so) system. from what i have been seeing however, they all require you to buy more maps later down the road. and he doesnt want that.

any suggestions?

I have a TomTom Go 720, which I bought at first release last August. It was $500. I've seen 'em as low as $250, I think, now. It's portable, so you can move it between vehicles. It's important that whatever you get DOES have the ability to get map updates. There are always corrections and changes that occur, and if he's gonna use it on a regular basis, he'll want to latest and greatest map available.

When I was looking into them I really liked the features of the tomtom720 but finally went with the Garmin nuvi 660, because I had read where the Tomtom had some reliablity issues. Basically just look at what you think he will need and try to go with the biggest screen you can afford because they are all bassically the same maps and directions when it comes down to it. I would recommend the voice to text (it says turn left on john st not turn right in 200 feet). Try amazon for comparing and pricing and check all the big box stores for the best prices.

Anyone that supports NavTEQ maps is cool with me.

Nokia purchased them earlier this year.
