NAS thoughts needed.

So, my PC at home is running low on storage. Instead of just throwing another drive in it. I thought I would go the NAS route so I can get to my files remotely and such. I could also allow access to my family members too (that would blow their minds). Anyway, I was looking at Western Digital's new My Book World Ed. and the more DIY Dlink DNS-323 with a 500 GB Seagate drive thrown in. I would have more options in adding more storage with the DLink enclosure down the road. Now here's the catch. I would LOVE to be able to access all my media on this device with my 360. Not sure if it's actually possible. I think the 360 needs a media server running in order for it to stream content. Or, will it just see the NAS as a big ol' fat HDD and play the content? Anyone have any experience with this out there in PGL land? Peench, throw a question up on your super, secret double probation MVP forums for me. See what MS has to say.

Interesting... I wonder if your PC could serve the media to your 360. I bet it could; you could just map the drive to your PC, and then media player/center would treat it like it was a local drive. You could test this now, by mapping a share on another PC and seeing if your 360 can get to it through your main PC. PC PC PC PC

I'm sure I could just map the drive for sharing in the Zune software and it would work. But, I don't want my PC on all the time for this. I would rather just have the NAS on and go from there.

You should just get Vista. There is an option in Media Center where you can turn your computer off, but it still shares the media in MC.

I guess it would depend on what kind of "signal" the NAS sends out. If it broadcasts itself as a HDD/media server, maybe the 360 would recognize it. If it just acted as a HDD... I don't think the 360 would be looking for that on the network port?

Some NAS thoughts:
  • Everyone wants my data!
  • If only my kid's brains had as much storage as my Maxtor RAID HD1801217. Then I could teach it respond to voice commands and everything!
  • Wow, this xbox lanyard is cool!
  • Master Chief would totally kick Samus's ass.
  • Peench is pretty good looking. For a guy. I mean... was that out loud?
Sorry, Crip, it's Friday. I had to get a pic in, I was desparate.

Crip I've had issues with a lot of the NAS-centric solutions I've tried. I've yet to find one that met all of my needs (most seem to fall short on the media sharing aspect). I'm kind of holding out hope for the MS Personal server that's supposed to be released sometime this fall. I've heard rumors of HP releasing a device with the MS Windows Personal Server for around $400 - $500.

In the interim, the user reviews at Newegg for NAS devices shed a lot of light on issues folks have run into.

His battle with Jay-Z was stupid, and he really hasn't had a hit lately, but I still think the world is his.

LOL. Nerd!

Yeah, I would love to pick up one of those Home Servers from HP. No word on cost yet. That would probably be my best bet. I would like to see some pricing soon. Because I need to beef up the storage NOW. Not this fall. lol

I'm real tempted to pick up one of these (not NAS) for backup and as a shared drive until the Win Personal Servers come out.

Beyond Micro 500GB at NewEgg for $124
