Duck and cover is going to get old really quickly. This game has a lot of hype/buzz/whatever going around it, and because of the hype, this game will probably be dissappointing to me like Dead Rising was. I hope not, but I have that feeling.

In the end, You are the only one that can limit the hype that gets built up around a title. Lower it, and with that the expectations do down. Then maybe you wont feel so let down upon its arrival. I've done just that with many games and it helped a lot when it actually came out. Example: Halo 3 isn't on the radar for me, and it will not be even at its release. Im waiting for others that were let down by part 2's SP to test it out and give me their opinion b4 I make a decision to buy it. If I have the willpower to do this, anyone can do this If the Halo 3 SP comes with TRUE coop(syslink supported), I'll try it regardless, but Bungie has screwed me twice on this and I have no faith in them whatsoever. The ONLY reason I loved Brute Force was for the syslink Coop. SP was TOTAL SHAT. A games overall experience, for me, is given a total positive facelift once any form of syslink co-op is introduced.
Everyone has a title that bit them in the ass, mostly due to hype. That title for me was Halo 2. The sheer disgust I felt after playing its SP(twice) taught me a lesson, and since have not let hype get bigger than the game itself. Syslink Coop(which I was expecting and Bungie confirmed there'd be none 3 weeks b4 launch) would have saved the game for me, simple as that.
Any game thats made around coop gets an A from me Once a human friend jumps in with you, real tactics can be used. And in the midst of firefights, you might forget youre stopping and popping so much. I will be distracted by the graphics anyways so....
Personally, I dont see how duck and cover is any more lame/boring than running straight at a person in a SP 1st or 3rd person shooter and strafing around them. If you want to do so, dont cover and run around like a mad man that the Serans let loose, keep that chainsaw fired up.
To each their own and 60.00 is a lot of money so if you have any doubt, I wouldnt bother.
**Keep in mind, not a single boss battle has been shown, not a single scary(water cooler moment) has been unsurfaced. And he said there would be one of those every 15 minutes. Moments that are every bit as shocking as the first time you get attacked by a Skaarj in Unreal circa 1998
You'd had to have played Unreal upon its release 8 years ago to appreciate that defining moment in gaming. Cliffy!

You mentioning hype and Brute Force helps to prove my point above. Im glad I lost all interest in the game about 3 months b4 it hit shelves, and another half year went by until 4 of us bought it used to try it out on Lan. Damn was I surprised how good it was when all players used their characters weapons in an useful way. It accounted for almost a limitless amount of ways to tackle a situation. Every person who frowns on Brute Force says it didnt match the hype. People need to do what I do.....
.......I remove all industry hype and form my own. Pandora Tomorrow suffered from a little bit of "hype letdown" personally, but once I found out it was that craptastic team Shanghia who made it, I understood the problem. Still a good game but nowhere as good as part 1, then part 3 came in and spanked the 1st(that doesnt happen often).
And thank goodness for no vehicles. Im sooooooooo sick of the "if it doesnt have vehicles its not gonna be worth my money" attitude. I never understood the excitement over it. Ask anyone that played Halo 2 with me.....never in a vehicle, always out on the perimiter sniping and launching rockets. You guys in the vehicles made for awesome targets though so
I can't wait for the Berserker to come crashing thru the wall only to chase myseld and Dominic! Thats the 1st video ever shown of Gears and thats what still has me waiting anxiously for its release. I'll get my 70.00 worth JUST for that "short staining" moment
*Side note: You mentioned Lost Planet. I need to get that one out of my head or I'll be very let down by it. I personally way over-hyped it and once I played the demo, I wanted to cry. Lost Planet is one of those that I'll let slip under the radar and try down the road. Doing that will probably let me enjoy it much much more. Yeah Im wierd but I know how my mind works
We just had a Hype convo at another forum and everyone agreed(after much debate) that Industry and Personal Hype are not one in the same. People need to stop blaming marketing campaigns for feeling let down with a game. Noone forced them to fall into the trap. We aren't 8 year olds for poops sake.
I just got an idea for a thread Biggest Surprises and Letdowns in Gaming?

Everyone buys games for different reasons. I buy them mostly for the story, much like why I go to the movies. I like story. If there isn't a story, I have a hard time concentrating on the action and/or graphics. Much like I have a hard time justifying why I'm along for the ride if the story lacks. Gears to me seems like it's going to have a captivating plotline, and from what I've read, they really worked their collective asses off on making the storyline in Single Player air-tight. If they can deliver a solid story with solid action, I won't consider my $60 wasted.
But from my point of view, and for why I'm buying the gams, you have to sort of ignore the hype around titles that haven't proven themselves worthy of the hype yet. We don't know anything about the Gears storyline (except for the small bits that were released) and at some point we have to go with a leap of faith for a title.
Hopefully, it will be and amazing title that warrants and justifys tie-in novels that can expand the storyline. The general public is not very smart though, and most "kids" don't want to be bothered with plotline, and unfortunately this is the audience that shows the most support. They want blood, gore & sex. If a smart game is released that is fun, extremely well-written, and unique (like Psychonauts) it's doomed to failure as long as kids are more interested in games like Saint's Row.
That being said, I wouldn't mind if they released just a little bit more content to the public so we can truly see the genius (or shortcomings).

I've never liked vehicles in a game, it ruined Unreal Tournaments for me. The only 2 things I liked about Halo 2.....the soundtrack and the rockets that could lock on vehicles Adios to those pesky bastards in the warthog.
Very few people play Halo the way I do/did(I'll never touch one again, not MP anyways). I tried it a few times and all it consisted of was everyone making a mad dash for vehicles and ramming each other. Great time for some, but I'd rather have diarrhea.
I thought you liked tactical games? How is sniping for a whole match boring? I sat on a hillside(sorry, camped, what a sniper is *supposed* to do) in the 1st Recon for 40 minutes with my sniper rifle, waiting for the last guy on the opposing team to make a mistake and show himself. That was possibly the best gaming moment for me. It was so gratifying when he walked into plain sight and I got into the lobby and the rest of my team was screaming with joy.
I can't wait for Gears of War and you will all buy it. Come on, fess up, you know you'll have it launch day

Did that make sense?
I'd be very interested in seeing the actual arrival time. If its on the same day, I'll have to try it out sometime

| This makes me feel a bit better. As much I love co-op, I still want a rock-solid single player game to sink my teeth into. I honestly forget about all the moments mentioned by Cliff that happen every 15 minutes.
I agree with all the above posts. Hell, Spoon and I even agree on something: Brute Force rocked co-op, sucked SP. I've been through BF more than a dozen times with my cousin, and we still don't get sick of it. Even after the first six times we beat it via splitscreen, it was still a blast.
Brutus: "We fight together... We die together..."
Tex: "I'm with ya on the fighting part..."
Classic lines.
After Dead Rising, I'm going to pull a Spoon and try and shove GOW under the radar until it comes out, because I really want to enjoy it and not buy into the hype.
And yes, I'll have it to play on Emergence day.
