Join Date: Sep 2006 Location: Ohio | EA exec says Gears is overrated and not innovative Now while everyone can speak their mind, does an EA exec really have room to talk after pumping out the same games, and in most cases, games that lose more and more features with every passing year? Good grief Quote:
Alain Tascan, general manager for EA Montreal, has revealed that he thinks Xbox 360 title Gears of War has been overrated by reviewers - with one or two exceptions.
Speaking in a panel discussion at the Montréal Games Summit, Tascan said, "What is Gears of War? I mean Gears of War brings nothing in terms of innovation to the shooter... Like, zero.
"I'm not talking about my tastes, I'm just saying, when you go to metacritic and you see a 96 for Gears of War, then you read the critics saying, 'Okay, storyline - there's none, gameplay is not innovative...' Then I say, why did they give this 96? They were blown away by the high quality of the graphics... Myself, I prefer something more creative," Tascan concluded.
"Only two very brave UK-based journalists said, 'You know what, Gears of War is a great game but it's like what Quake was a few years ago.

"Why are people loving it so much? It's like added production value, incredible cutscenes and the best ever graphics ever. I'm sure it's going to be a great success, I can't wait to play it, but let's face that graphics are still number one," Tascan continued.
He then used the comparison of a nice looking girl you might see in a bar and go up and talk to, "And if she's smart enough, that's the gameplay.

By all means, make something creative pal. Story? 95% of their games are sports titles, the others are Racers

| I agree Spoon, EA is not one to talk. Look at all the games that "SHOULD" have been good. BF2, NBA Live series, Madden, NFS, etc.
All of those fall short in a lot of ways. Granted I still like some of those games but, they are DEFINITELY not anything that can be compared to Gears of War!!
It sounds a bit like jealousy to me. They have not had a "killer app" yet, to my recollection.

They just recently finished the buying of Dice so dont give them credit for a game they did not develop. They want creativity and stories? Maybe they should actually make a game thats worth more than 5.00 before they say such silly things. That guy makes Kutaragi sound like a professor!

Do you think EA of all companies has any room to talk about creativity and story lines? lol. I almost didnt post this news because it seemed so funny.

| How about EA worry about fixing there own games and stop butt-farking THIER consumers with sub par games and Total lack of support. I love when a sucky company trys to slam the competition. | |

Anyway, I think that this game is innovative, that the graphics rock, that the storyline has me thoroughly hooked, and that the cut scenes are phenomenal!
I feel like I am playing my favorite graphic novel or anime right now. This game is Fraggin SIIIIIIICKKKKK and EA is pissed because they just got left in the dust. Hopefully this will kick their corporate structure in the butt, because it is sad to see such a solid company no longer living up to its potential.
This game is a benchmark that future releases will be compared to.
IMNSHO. (In my not so humble opinion)

| I agree with Rhino and I believe a fair number of others do as well. The storyling is very interesting, the game is very well done, the graphics are phenomenal and you are forced to play the game much differently than prior shooters. Cover is essential. Tactics are essential.
I also agree that EA has NO room to talk. It sounds like he was calling out someone else's opinion tho. I am outta town on a borrowed computer so I didn't have time to read the whole thing tho. They might be upset that their recent "innovative titles" haven't done too well while their 2007 version of every single game they've ever made with very little innovation continue to sell.

Any guesses as to what his studio is working on?
That's right. Army of Two.
Many of their features are already in Gears of War. Many features that would have made Army of Two stand out (The dropping in and out feature as one).
So he bad mouths the competition. Nothing special.

It's F'n EA. I highly doubt it. They're are screwing up the game industry.
