Microsoft Withdraws from HD DVD

Microsoft Withdrawds from HD DVD.

As a result of recent decisions made by Toshiba, Hollywood studios, and retailers, Microsoft plans to withdraw from HD DVD. Xbox will no longer manufacture new HD DVD players for the Xbox 360, but we will continue to provide standard product and warranty support for all Xbox 360 HD DVD Players in the market. As we stated earlier, we do not believe this decision will have any material impact on the Xbox 360 platform or our position in the marketplace. HD DVD is one of the several ways we offer a high definition experience to consumers and we will continue to give consumers the choice to enjoy digital distribution of high definition movies and TV shows directly to their living room, along with playback of the DVD movies they already own.

~

I guess this was not really a surprise, but wow it is moving really fast in the direction of BluRay.

yea, its moving amazingly fast, with the recent rumors going around about the hd-dvd addon dropping to 50, would it be a bad idea for me to pick it up? i know they will stop or have already stopped production of hd-dvds, but i figure if i can get the movies super cheap for awhile it might be worth while

Yeah, not surprising. I'm hoping that there will be dual format drives when I'm ready to buy a Blu-ray player. Planet Earth rocks and not being able to use those dics will totally piss the wife off. It was a bday present.

CoryB23 is on a distinguished road

As much as I was hoping HD-DVD would succeed, I am glad I waited through the media war and held off on purchasing an HD-DVD player or 360 add-on. That was totally against my previous upgradeitus ways, but I think I'm getting a little more patient in my old age

Looks like I'll have to invest in either a PS3 or a dedicated Blue-Ray player once I know where I'll be living and what the future HT will be like.

I would pick up a cheap drive, I have also plugged mine into my PC...the hd-dvd's should get cheaper. I also like the additional USB input without having to non 360 equipment. Besides what about HDPron?

So, do you think MS will offer some sort of BluRay add-on in the future? Possibly, give us HD-DVD owners a rebate towards the purchase as well? Let's hope so!

I don't think they will. They have nothing to gain in my opinion
