We've had a few questions about gum rubber as a material for the first (drum-head-facing) layer of our product. Questions like...
"Why don't you use gum rubber?"
and
"How come you don't use gum rubber?"
and
"Why isn't gum rubber the thing you use?"
You get the gist...
Well, the answer is twofold:
1) The foam we use is inexpensive, works perfectly with our cutting machines, and just plain performs well with regard to drum sensitivity, rebound, etc. (our
Testimonials and Reviews back this up).
2) We haven't really had time to thoroughly research gum rubber as a possible layer. Does it come in the proper size, with a suitably semi-permanent adhesive backing, at prices comparable to EVA foam? Are there large wholesale suppliers of it, like we have for the foam? Will the felt layer stick to the gum rubber like it does to the foam? We haven't got answers to these questions yet.
At the moment, we're very happy with the price and performance of our product, so to be honest there isn't a real urgency for us to explore other materials. If any of you have any thoughts on the matter - perhaps you've used gum rubber and liked it? - please let us know! If there's a market, we're willing to look into it.
