Call of Duty, in real life!

Someone in another forum shared this link, so I thought I'd put it here, since it's closely related.

Color WWI Pictures

A few posts in that thread suggest their digitally colorized, while others say the French are the only ones who had color technology back then. I don't really care, but the pics are cool lookin' to me.

I don't believe color photos were done to that extent in those days. Not to mention, I am not sure if the quality of pitures would be that good.

The print process during that time took a while to do and with that, they weren't even that consistent. I think they used glass covered in photo-sensitive silver to make them. With that, they could add color later after the print was done but, it would look a lot more like a painting style than those pictures. And the colors would be a lot more faded and washed out in general.

Wow, those are gorgeous and, from what it seems, completely authentic.

Quote:
This beautiful picture was made by Jean-Baptiste Tournassoud, Chief of the Photography and Cinematography Organization of the French Army.

Tournassoud used a new technique, invented by Auguste and Louis Lumière (PICTURE LEFT), forerunners in photography and movies.

The first experiments with color photography were carried out in 1904 near Lyon in France, where father Lumière owned a photographic factory. In 1907 the Lumière brothers patented the autochrome process they had invented.

The picture of the Algerians above was made with such an autochrome plate. Microscopic grains of potato starch were dyed red, green, and blue-violet, then mixed evenly and coated onto a sheet of glass. A black-and-white emulsion was then flowed over this layer.

During exposure, the grains of potato starch on each plate acted as millions of tiny filters. The light-sensitive emulsion was then reversal processed into a positive transparency.

Jean-Baptiste TournassoudWhen viewed, light passes through the emulsion and is filtered to the proper color by the starch grains. The resulting mosaic of glowing dots on glass gives autochromes the look of pointillist paintings.

Autochromes were the first true color pictures, and the only industrial color photography process until 1935. Commander Jean-Baptiste Tournassoud (picture on the right) and his photographers used this technique to record the circumstances under which the poilu's lived and fought.

You will find many of these French autochromes on page 6, on page 7, on page 8 and on page 9 of this article (some others are scattered over the other pages).

This is the original site for the color photos.

Peench, I hate to tell you this.... Band of Brothers is eventually going to get to HD-DVD. There's no release date at all but, it's been mentioned!

But, yes... Band of Brothers is one of my favorites of ALL time! It's like Saving Private Ryan but, fleshed out, and 10 times more involving!

Band of Brothers was one of the most powerful shows I ever watched. I have watched it all the way through twice and had started a 3rd time with my wife. The attention to detail is amazing.

Think they'll ever make it to XBL Marketplace?
