A reliable source close to the Call of Duty development teams has revealed not only the existence of Call of Duty 4, but vital details surrounding the game as well, including the fact that it will be based on modern combat.
According to our source, Call of Duty 4 will be developed by Infinity Ward, the developer behind the first and second installments. The three-way deal established between Infinity Ward, Treyarch, and Activision states that Infinity Ward will develop all even numbered titles while Treyarch develops the odd numbered games, such as Call of Duty 3. Treyarch did develop Call of Duty 2: Big Red One as well, however.
As aforementioned, Call of Duty 4 is said to step away from the war torn locales of World War II, instead focusing on the battlefields of present day. It is unknown if it will take the same path as Electronic Arts’ Battlefield franchise, placing the spotlight on the Middle East.
The source compared Call of Duty 4’s technical achievements to other games saying that while most shooters have two or three critical points on the head, Call of Duty 4 has 16, saying that you can shoot the side of an opponent’s helmet to make it spin on their head, or knock the helmet clean off. Supposedly you will even be able to shoot an enemy’s ear off.
Although Call of Duty’s single player has always been a mainstay of the franchise, the multiplayer is certainly something to write home about. Our source has said that there have been multiplayer bouts with 54 players. PC gamers will be happy to know that they will be able to join the action once again, as Infinity Ward is supposed to be bringing Call of Duty 4 to the PC as well as consoles. Call of Duty 3 is only available on consoles and eventually the PSP.

Looks like I'll be getting CoD 4, CoD 6 and so on. Treyarch comes across as another Team Shanghai who rushes a game to market ala Pandora Tomorrow.
Treyarch couldnt even get CoD 3 to run in true 1280x720
Bring on CoD 4 baby!! | |

The multiplayer I've played on COD3 is nothing short of brilliant, IMHO. I know you are talking graphically... just remember that gameplay is the most important factor out there for what I would consider a majority of users. COD3 runs great right out of the box, and is super fun online. Sure, the game could be more perfect graphically, but it's pretty much dead on in the fun side. I don't consider it rushed at all.
Not every game will be the Holy Grail of Graphics

Join Date: Sep 2006 Location: Ohio | I wasnt talking about its graphics at all(I've done that enough, although Crippler made a great comment). The gameplay just does Not feel like CoD 2 did(single player that is), and that for me ruins it. I couldnt care less about the online play, I couldnt warm up to its single player, something is missing. Im all about campaigns/single player(check my top 10 or 20 and you'll see the trend).
I bet part 4 feels and plays more like part 2, we will have to wait and see though.
back to Cripplers comment and because Quo thought I was speaking about graphics...
Gears, just by looking at it, has 50 times the geometry onscreen yet has NO slowdown during the campaign, plays in true 720p, no jaggies, no screen tearing, yada yada. These other games that arent pushing the envelope graphically like Gears does, have jaggies, screen tearing, and arent even playing in 1280x720??! There is NO excuse for this other than sheer laziness and rushing to market.
I am done. | |

Interesting. I can't speak to the SP b/c I haven't had the chance to play that side yet unfortunately.
So, as far as graphics go... certainly Gears has raised the bar! So does that consitute an exemplary effort by the Developer of Gears or does that mean that all other contenders are lazy and rushed to the market? When something great comes out, I tend to think that the developer did an awesome job. Not that they did an average job and the other developers are a bunch of losers who can't do it right, lol. Graphically, COD3 looks better (at least the online component) to me than COD2. I'm happy with the way it looks. But compare it to Gears and it isn't even a comparison. You guys are dead on that that's the new measuring stick.
Isn't it great though that Gears is now the new "standard"? Can you imagine the graphics that these boxes are onna be pumped out now in even "average" games graphically? What was first rate is now, once again, unacceptable. Great stuff!

There will be a few gems like Mass Effect and BioShock that will be eye candy(their gameplay looks to be just as good too!) but Im not expecting many games to match Gears graphically anytime soon. I pray Im wrong or my and hope that in 2 years time, games by default are starting to look almost as good.
Let it be known so in the future we dont get our lines crossed.... Its obvious you focus primarily on a games online component, whereas I'm the exact opposite

| 54 Players? Laaaaaaaaaag.
I hope they can get it as unlaggy as possible. I haven't played CoD3 yet, so I don't know if that lags, but CoD2 had lag with 8 players.
Either way Modern CoD sounds awesome.

Will any CoD make an impression like part 2 did for some of us? Doubtful, but its possible. GRAW was probably the best ever in the series and that came out 6 years after the series began. Chaos Theory was the best Splinter and that was part 3.
I'm hoping CoD 4 captures that special something for me, and Im going to follow my own advice for once and NOT get amped up about it. Keep it lowkey until it arrives and enjoy it
**The game is still great, I dont want people thinking Im saying otherwise. Personally its just not worth the 64 smackers right now.

I think the thing about COD3 for me is not that it's particularly innovative in any way -- it just kinda puts the online stuff together in a package and does the things that have been done online before and does them better. It's a better Battlefield than Battlefield was.
This is not a game that's setting precedent, or breaking ground. It's just taking some stuff from other games and doing them a little better. And it really needed to be done. I mean, we can't count on EA to finish the job and really improve a game. So other developers are doing that by building on a good idea.
That said, there's still stuff to do to make the lobby system better in this game.
Did the series peak in COD2? It's possible. But more than likely the series is changing so much in the next installment that a direct comparison may not even be possible anyway... so you end up with apples and oranges.

There is NO excuse for this other than sheer laziness and rushing to market. | One thing we have to keep in mind is that Cliffy and company developed their game on the Unreal 3 engine that they created. They better get the most out of it or that would be a sad effort.
Treyarch I believe was merely updating Infinity Ward's COD2 game for their purposes (don't remember what engine it was running on, be it third party or in-house) and we know that engine isn't as powerful as Unreal 3. That said, if what you say is true (and I don't doubt it) then their does seem to be some laziness on their part.
Back to the point of this thread - I'm looking forward to trying out COD4 (and 3 come Christmas time). Though I've though the WWII shooter has been played out for awhile, COD and COD2 are two of my favorite games of the past 5 years. I hope I can say the same about 3 and 4 soon.

| I think at this point, I will not buy another Call of Duty game unless they make sure that I can get it to work WITH A ROUTER. I know more people who have routers in their homes than not.
One of the biggest aspects of the game I was looking forward to I can't enjoy with any convenience because of the fact that I have a router, which I might add, my 360 is in the DMZ so it shouldn't even affect...
I'd trade off 24 players for a multiplayer game I can actually play online...

Cory, Your 1st paragraph is exactly what I typed a few months back when someone at the *other* forum said there was No Way that Gears footage is real time. I reminded him that it was being built by the masters who created the engine themselves and had all resources at their fingertips Even after that, I was deemed a crazed fanboy(which is true anyways, lol) and I wish I remember who that person was because I'd surely bring the issue up and show him the outcome.
Back on topic..
I will surely get CoD 3 but when its cheaper and when I have less on my gaming plate. From what I played, its still worth getting at some point
