They replace the manufacture date with the current refurb date. Look behind the faceplate at the silver MS label. Black marker dots or lines before and after 'Microsoft' indicates a refurb.

I have a new Premium with a date of 8-9-07 and it has the HDMI. As does Zoom. The HDMI units began hitting in late July. Check that sticker.
