The QRF at my local nuclear power plant isn't something you want to mess with. I've shot with them on a few occasions. They have the cool toys.
With the new nuclear technology you can "recycle" your nuclear waste and continue to create energy with it... to an extent.
There was a nuclear plant in FL that shut down
automatically earlier this year. It sensed a power surge that ended up being a blown transformer. The plant shut itself down for a few hours while the transformer was replaced so as to not do any damage to the plant or the grid.
The evacuation route for Three Mile Island had my mom and her family driving within a few miles of the power plant.
My uncle worked on SSBNs. My uncle got more radiation from his comms than the reactor.
We have come a LONG ways in thirty years.
Solar is nice, if you want to charge something for a little while... I'm thinking about putting an array on my garage roof to offset the cost of running my Xbox360. Solar isn't eficient, yet.
Tidal power is one that hasn't been mentioned. It will only work in costal areas, though.
Personally... solar panels, wind generator, rain water cistern (for grey water uses), a GOOD diesel vehicle (damn you Toyota for not bringing the diesel Hilux here!), and a personal bio diesel mixer would be a good way to blow ~$100k in green fashion.
But then, if you made and used your own 100% bio diesel, you couldn't, legally, drive it on US roads. The .gov requires fuel taxes on all road use.
