This reminds me of The Mist. I watched a conversation between Frank Dubont and Stephen King the night before last... they had a hell of a time getting their movie through without having to change the ending.

Maybe atypical endies are starting to catch on again around here. I know I like them, although I do enjoy happy endings a lot of times as well.
