Great question and hopefully this will help answer your question.

This is from the original post that has the details about the contest:

At the end of the contest (4-6 weeks) we will split the bands into two halves based on overall scores. There will be a top and bottom tier. The bands in each tier will all face off one final time, over a two week period. The face off will be based on 4-6 songs and again the top overall score total will win their tier. There will be prizes for the top bands in the both tiers, plus other giveaways. We are going to give out some prizes for the best band name and also for the best band picture. So be sure to dress up some night and post your band pics.
I realize that the skill levels and number of bands members will make the scores vary. So the bands that are very skilled will be put in an upper tier and the other in a bottom tier. That will help balance the bands when the contest comes to an end and the prizes can be earned.

The main purpose of this to get people together playing Rock Band and having fun.
