That's where I fly my "Different strokes for different folks" flag. I loved the first 3 MGS games, and I'll admit each had their flaws, but that still didn't keep me(and a bunch of others) from enjoying them. The Metal Gear franchise is an acquired taste, no doubt, but it is still a venerable franchise that is still relevant.
That being said, MGS4 will be a lot different from past titles. Better camera, more structured missions, and more freedom to play as you like. While this is alienating some fans(I liked the wide-open mission design), it will allow some newcomers the opportunity to experience Metal Gear in a more
easy-to-digest form. The story might turn some people off, so might
90-minute cutscenes, but those things aren't for newcomers.
I've been a Metal Gear fan for well over 10 years, and this game is closure for me. While I'm heartbroken the Solid Snake storyline is ending, it would be even worse if the last iteration wasn't done correctly. The way the fans want it. The Metal Gear storyline is a convoluted one, no ones arguing that. But it would be a disservice to fans to deny them the right of a proper ending. Kojima won't allow that, and I respect him for it.
